Over the past two weeks, we have looked at various types of maps and their respective implications concerning countries around the world. Today, we will be introduced to a new type of map called a cartogram. This is a map in which some thematic mapping variable (such as average life span) is substituted for land area. As a result, the map will be distorted in order to convey information of this alternative variable. Consequently, we will be comparing various cartograms to gain further insight about the world.
Directions:
A. As you view and analyze each map, complete the following cartogram worksheet via Google Docs. Be sure that once the worksheet is complete you share with me through Google Drive at [email protected]. Also note that Google Docs will allow me to monitor the level of participation and contribution of each student.
B. For cartogram #1 (on right), answer the following questions:
1. Create a list of two questions you have based on the map concerning PERSIA. Discuss what these answers might be in your group.
2. Which countries have the largest extremes? What does the inverse relationship imply about this variable? What might this variable be?
3. Does the data on the map support your decision?

4. Based on the cartogram on right, what does the variable imply about a country economically?
5. To what extent does this cartogram demonstrate industrialization? Cite a specific example.
6. What other variables might correlate to non-industrialized countries in a cartogram?
C. For cartogram #2 (on right), answer the following questions:
7. Create a list of two questions you have based on the map concerning PERSIA. Discuss what these answers might be in your group.
8. Which countries have the largest extremes? What does the inverse relationship imply about this variable? What might this variable be?
9. Does the data on the map support your decision? Explain why.

10. Based on the cartogram on right, compare and contrast with the first map (carbon emissions). To what extent are these maps correlated? Explain why this might be.
11. Why might certain industrialized countries in the first map still have large amounts of poverty in spite of such economic growth? Cite specific examples.
12. What other factors aside from industrialization (or a lack of) may account for human poverty?
D. For cartogram #3 (on right), answer the following questions:
13. Create a list of questions you have based on the map concerning PERSIA. Discuss what these answers might be in your group.
14. Which countries have the largest extremes? What does the inverse relationship imply about this variable? What might this variable be?
15. Does the data on the map support your decision?

16. Based on the cartogram on right, does adult literacy correspond better with the first or second map? Explain your reasoning. Cite specific examples.
17. What are two connections you can make between adult literacy and human poverty?
18. Did you have enough cartograms to make a connection to determine if there is a link between poverty, adult literacy, and industrialization? Support your reasoning. What other cartograms would have been helpful? Use World Mapper to help formulate your answer.
19. Share your document via Google Drive with [email protected].
20. Lastly, choose a cartogram and replicate it! Put the answer on the back. This should be done individually. Use World Mapper to choose your map.
